Thornton Electrician License CO: No Fee, Two Years

Thornton charges nothing for an electrical contractor license and gives it a two year term. What it does not have is a training center or a test center, so the practical work of getting licensed happens somewhere else.

Class D, no fee, two years

From the City of Thornton contractor license packet, last updated January 25, 2024.

Electrical contractors fall under Class D Specialty Licenses. Plumbing and electrical contractors are required to provide the city with a copy of their current valid State of Colorado Contractor's License and their Master's License.

The fee line for electrical in the packet reads Electrical, state and master licenses required, and its fee reads NO FEE.

The term is two years: electrical contractor registration is valid for two years, where other contractor licenses in the packet are valid for one.

No insurance requirement since 2023

The same packet says that effective February 13, 2023, insurance information is no longer a requirement when applying for a new license or renewing a current license.

That is unusual. Colorado Springs asks for $1,000,000 and $2,000,000 general liability with a named certificate holder, Fort Collins asks for $2,000,000 general aggregate with the city named, and Adams County asks for general liability naming its Building Safety division.

Thornton dropped it. Your own contracts and your workers' compensation duties are a separate matter, and the state's contractor application asks for a workers' compensation certificate where you have employees.

The reciprocity line, and a conflict inside it

The Thornton packet refers to reciprocal jurisdictions and names Denver, Arvada, Aurora and Fort Collins as jurisdictions with electrical contractor licenses that may be reciprocated case by case.

That sits against the City of Aurora's own contractor license fees and requirements sheet, revised 02/2026, which says the City of Aurora does not issue a separate contractor's license for electricians.

Both are city documents and we print both. The Thornton packet is dated January 25, 2024 and the Aurora sheet is later, which is the reading we would weight, but neither of us gets to decide. The Aurora page carries the same conflict from the other side.

No apprenticeship sponsor with a Thornton address

We found none. The nearest chapter campus is IEC Rocky Mountain at 11429 Pearl St., Northglenn, CO 80233, which is the chapter's main address.

Its published structure is four years of apprentice experience, 8,000 on-the-job training hours and at least 288 hours of classroom training, with classes meeting once a week from 5:30pm and evening sessions running to 9:30pm. Tuition at early registration is $600 to $650 for members and $900 to $950 for non-members, with books at $450 to $650 a year on top, and the published figures carry asterisks we did not read.

The nearest joint IBEW and NECA center is the Denver Joint Electrical Apprenticeship and Training Committee at 5610 Logan St, Denver, CO 80216, whose applications close September 30, 2026 and reopen February 1, 2027 with a $35.00 non-refundable fee.

The college question

Front Range Community College has a Westminster campus serving the Thornton area.

No electrical program there is confirmed. The college's apprenticeship page names apprenticeships in healthcare, manufacturing, IT and tree care and no electrical one, and its A to Z program finder returned only navigation when we fetched it on 7 September 2026.

So we cannot tell you whether an FRCC electrical credit program exists. Ask the college, and do not assume any course satisfies the Board's 288 hour requirement until you have that in writing.

Where Thornton candidates test

There is no PSI site in Thornton on the bulletin's list of ten Colorado centers.

The nearest are Broomfield, at McAir Aviation, 11945 Airport Way, Jeffco Airport, Broomfield, CO 80021, and Denver (Wheat Ridge) at 4891 Independence St #220, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033.

The Broomfield site is inside an airport facility, so check the approach and the parking before the morning of the exam. The test day page covers identification and the two day cancellation rule.

The state credential comes first

Thornton's own document makes the order plain: it asks for your state contractor license and your master's license before it issues anything.

So the sequence is state license, then state contractor registration, then the city Class D specialty license. C.R.S. 12-115-110(5) is the statute behind the middle step, and the Board requires the registration to hold or employ a licensed master electrician as the responsible individual.
