Do I need a license to do electrical work in Colorado?
Yes, for the trade itself. C.R.S. 12-115-109(1) says no person shall engage in or work at the business, trade, or calling of a journeyman electrician, master electrician, or residential wireman in this state until the person has received a license from the division or a temporary permit.
Working as a registered apprentice under direct supervision is the legal way in before you hold a license, and your employer files that registration within 30 days of hiring you.
Does Colorado have a journeyman electrician license?
Yes, and it is issued to a person rather than a business. 12,549 were active in the state's September 2026 data.
C.R.S. 12-115-103 defines the journeyman as having the qualifications, training, experience and technical knowledge to wire for, install, and repair electrical apparatus and equipment for electric light, heat, and power. The journeyman page has the requirements.
How many hours do I need for a Colorado journeyman license?
8,000 hours earned in no less than 4 years, with 2,000 of them in commercial or industrial work, plus 288 hours of classroom education. All three figures are on the Board's applications page.
The commercial block has its own clock. The statute describes it as two thousand hours over a period of at least two years, sitting inside the 8,000 over at least four.
Is it 2,000 or 4,000 commercial hours in Colorado?
Two thousand. It appears in three state places: the Board's applications page, the Board's own journeyman application preview, and C.R.S. 12-115-110.
One prep site publishes 4,000 on a guide dated July 10, 2026. That figure appears in no state source we read. Work to the state number and keep the record of every commercial hour anyway.
How do I become an electrical apprentice in Colorado?
Get hired by a registered electrical contractor. The Board's page says the employer must complete an application to register the apprentice with the Board within 30 days of the apprentice starting work.
You file a short application of your own for the APE number, which asks for contact information, name history and screening disclosures. No experience, schooling or age requirement is published for it.
How many apprentices can one electrician supervise in Colorado?
Three. C.R.S. 12-115-115(1) says a licensed electrician shall not directly supervise more than three apprentices at a job site.
The Board's fine schedule attacks the same limit from the enforcement side, listing failure of an electrical contractor to maintain a supervisory ratio of one licensed electrician to three apprentices at $375 for a first offense, $600 for a second and up to $2,000 per day after that.
What counts as direct supervision?
Physical presence. C.R.S. 12-115-103 defines it as the supervising licensed master electrician, journeyman electrician, residential wireman, or photovoltaic installer being physically present at the same physical address where the apprentice is working.
Not reachable by phone, not on site later. The same address, at the time.
What can a residential wireman do in Colorado?
Wire for and install electrical apparatus and equipment for one, two, three and four family dwellings, on the statutory definition at C.R.S. 12-115-103.
Commercial work is outside the license. A licensed residential wireman on a commercial job site has to be registered as an apprentice and supervised by a journeyman or master electrician, on the Board's page and in rule 3 CCR 710-1.6.A.2.
How do I get a Colorado master electrician license?
Through one of four routes on the Board's page: 10,000 hours in no less than 5 years; a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering with 2,000 hours of construction experience in no less than 1 year; graduating from an electrical trade school or community college with 8,000 hours in no less than 4 years; or 2,000 hours in no less than 1 year beyond the journeyman requirements, including planning and layout and supervision held under a journeyman license.
Then pass the PSI master examination before submitting the application, which is what the Board's master preview requires.
Do I need a master electrician to start an electrical company in Colorado?
The registration does. The Board requires an electrical contractor registration to hold or employ a licensed master electrician to serve as the responsible individual for the company, on an Acknowledgement of Responsibility form signed by the owner and that master.
You can own the business and employ the master. What you cannot do is operate without one: 321 registrations sat in the status Need Master Hire, Cannot Practice in the September 2026 data.
What is the new photovoltaic installer registration?
A registration created by Senate Bill 25-165. The Board says photovoltaic installers must register with the State Electrical Board no later than December 31, 2026, that applications will be available in late 2026, and that people should apply as soon as they open.
C.R.S. 12-115-110(7) aims it at a contractor operating as of September 1, 2025 that performs photovoltaic installer work with at least one NABCEP-certified employee. The page for it has the five conditions.
Do solar hours count toward a Colorado electrician license?
Yes, on three routes. C.R.S. 12-115-110(6)(a) allows two thousand hours as a NABCEP PV installation professional, up to two thousand hours supervised by one, or up to four thousand hours backed by payroll records and project documentation.
Subsection (6)(b) credits the second and third at one hour for every two worked, so the four thousand hour route earns two thousand. The subsections it credits are the journeyman 8,000 hours and the residential wireman 4,000 hours.
When do Colorado electrician licenses expire?
September 30, every three years. The Board's homepage says the current licenses expire on 9/30/2026 and can be renewed through 11/30/2026.
Board rule 3 CCR 710-1.13.A adds a 60 day grace period during which renewal is possible without disciplinary sanction, with a delinquency fee for late renewal whose amount is not published.
How much does a Colorado electrician license cost?
The exam is $78 and a retest is $73, both from PSI. The state publishes nothing else.
C.R.S. 12-115-117(1) lists thirteen fee categories and sets no amount for any of them. The Board's fee page returns a 404 and its licensing services page returns a 403. Third party figures contradict each other and one of them contradicts PSI's own $78, so read the amount on the application screen.
How many continuing education hours does Colorado require?
24 hours in each three year license period, for active master electricians, journeyman electricians and residential wiremen.
At least four of those hours must be in the National Electrical Code Changes competency, and no more than four may be in safety. The first renewal of a license issued on condition of passing an examination is exempt, and you keep your own records for at least seven years.
Which states have electrical reciprocity with Colorado?
Fourteen, quoted from the Board's applications page: Alaska, Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming.
You need a current, active journeyman or master certificate in good standing, gained through a state administered examination with a passing score, held for at least one year.
Does Colorado have reciprocity with Texas?
No. The Board's own journeyman application preview says Texas is not a reciprocal state.
A Texas licensee uses the endorsement route instead, which asks for a Verification of Licensure form from the issuing board and the Colorado hour totals. The reciprocity page covers the edition conflict that endorsement runs into.
Can I do my own electrical work on my house in Colorado?
C.R.S. 12-115-116 exempts a person doing electrical work on their own property, except for new installations on property intended for sale or rent or open to the public.
The permit still applies. The Board says a homeowner may install electrical work at their residence and must obtain a permit.
Who inspects electrical work in Colorado?
The State Electrical Board performs electrical inspections in locations throughout the state that are not inspected by a local authority, and a valid Colorado State Electrical permit must be obtained before installing electrical wiring in those places.
C.R.S. 12-115-120 lets a town, city, county, city and county, or qualified state institution of higher education run its own building department or its own electrical code and inspection program, in which case you apply there. The state still inspects public schools.
What is the fine for unlicensed electrical work in Colorado?
Board rule 3 CCR 710-1.10 sets $225 for a first unlicensed journeyman offense and $300 for a first unlicensed master electrician offense, $600 for a second in either case, and up to $2,000 per day for subsequent offenses.
The rule adds that paying a fine from a citation does not relieve you of correcting the violation noted in it, and gives ten working days to respond to a citation.
