Lakewood Electrician License CO: Classes and Testing

Lakewood has something no other Colorado city has: one campus that teaches electrical work and also hosts the state examination. Red Rocks Community College is the college and the test center, at the same West Sixth Avenue address.

One address, two roles

Red Rocks Community College sits at 13300 W. 6th Ave., Lakewood, CO 80228, and it publishes a long list of electrical credentials.

PSI's bulletin lists a test center at Red Rocks Community College, 13300 West Sixth Avenue, Assessment Center, Lakewood, CO 80228.

So a Lakewood candidate can study on the campus where they will later sit the state examination. That does not make the college an exam vendor or the exam a college exam. It means the college hosts an assessment center that PSI uses.

What Red Rocks publishes

Degrees, as printed on the college's electrical program page: Construction Electrician, AAS, 61 credits. Construction Electrician IBEW/NECA, AAS, 61 credits. Industrial Control and Instrumentation Technology, AAS, 64 credits. Maintenance Electrician, AS, 61 credits. Power Line Technician, AAS.

Certificates: 288 Hour Journeyman License, 20 credits. Advanced Construction Electrician, 33 credits. Construction Electrician, 36 credits. Residential Construction Electrician, 24 credits. The 288 hour certificate, in the college's words

Two of those titles matter more than the rest for a Colorado candidate.

Construction Electrician IBEW/NECA maps onto the joint apprenticeship route run out of Denver. And the certificate titled 288 Hour Journeyman License maps onto the Board's requirement that 288 hours of classroom education is required for all applicants, with no grandfathering of any apprentice registration.

The college describes it as a 288-hour course option that meets state requirements toward the journeyman license, and names partnerships with industry employers in Colorado and apprenticeship opportunities.

That wording is the college's, and we are quoting it rather than endorsing it. We are not a school and we do not tell you that any course is Board approved. If the 288 hours are the reason you are enrolling, ask the college for that in writing and check it against the statute and rule wording, including the eight year against four year window conflict.

What the City of Lakewood asks for

Electrical contractors register with the city under Class B. From the city's contractor registration information sheet: attach a copy of the State of Colorado Electrical Contractor's license, and attach a copy of the State of Colorado Master's license for the responsible supervisor.

On renewal, the sheet says all renewal registrations will be for three years. New registrations are probationary and issued for one year.

No fee and no insurance minimum appear on the sheet, and no document date is printed on it, so both the price and the currency of the document are unconfirmed. Note also that lakewoodco.gov and lakewood.org both serve City of Lakewood, Colorado content, and lakewoodoh.gov is a different city in Ohio. We used lakewoodco.gov.

Warren Tech, and what it does not offer

Warren Tech is the Jefferson County Public Schools career and technical center, with a Central Campus at 13300 W 2nd Place, Lakewood, CO 80228, offering 40 programs across three campuses.

There is no electrical program on the published list. The closest are Building Trades and Precision Machining Technology.

That is worth knowing because Warren Tech is the obvious high school trades route in Jefferson County, and electrical is not one of its lanes.

The license itself is still the state's

Whatever you study, the credential comes from the State Electrical Board. C.R.S. 12-115-109(1) bars work at the trade of journeyman, master or residential wireman without a state license or temporary permit.

The route is apprentice registration filed by your employer within 30 days of hire, hours in the right categories, the 288 classroom hours for journeyman, the PSI exam, then the application.

Sitting the exam at Red Rocks

Every Colorado paper is 90 scored items in 240 minutes with 63 correct to pass, plus 30 extra minutes for unscored items, up to 7 of them on the residential wireman paper and up to 10 on the other three. The fee is $78 and a retest is $73.

PSI supplies the code book and a formula page, and since August 1, 2026 that book is the 2026 National Electrical Code. You may not write, highlight, underline or index on the references, and you may not use any other materials.

Bring unexpired photo identification carrying your signature, because Board rule 3 CCR 710-1.8.A requires positive photo identification for admission. The test day page has PSI's accepted list.

What we do not publish

No Lakewood pay figure. Our Colorado source file carries no wage research, so there is no citable number to print and we leave the gap where it is.

The state licensing counts for September 2026 are what we can give you: 12,549 active journeymen, 7,441 masters, 2,032 residential wiremen.

Questions people ask

Do I need a Lakewood electrician license?

The city registers electrical contractors under Class B rather than licensing electricians. You attach a copy of the state electrical contractor license and a copy of the state master's license for the responsible supervisor.
