No waiting period published
Colorado Electrician Exam Retakes: Fee and Timing
Some states make you wait ninety days after a failure. Colorado publishes no waiting period at all, which sounds generous until you notice that you also get no information about what you got wrong.

The rule, as PSI prints it
There is no published waiting period. What the bulletin does say is that it is not possible to make a new examination appointment on the same day you have taken an examination.
It then gives a worked example. A candidate who fails on a Wednesday can call the next day, Thursday, and retest as soon as Friday, depending upon space availability.
So the practical floor is the next day for booking and the day after that for sitting, subject to a seat being free at your center.
The retest fee
Retest Fee $73, against $78 for the first attempt.
The same conditions apply. Examination fees are not refundable or transferable, and the examination fee is valid for one year from the date of payment.
That one year window matters more on a retake, because people who fail often step back and let months pass. Pay when you are ready to book, not when you decide you will eventually go back.
The part that makes a retake harder here
You will not be told what you got wrong. Board rule 3 CCR 710-1.8.C says examination results will be provided in writing in a pass or fail format, and that results will not be given in any other manner.
Rule 1.8.D adds that examinations shall not be subject to review by candidates. There is no appeal to look at the paper, and no breakdown by subject.
Rule 1.8.B treats the content and answers as proprietary property, and a licensee or registrant who discloses examination content can be disciplined. So asking a colleague what was on it is a bad idea for both of you.
How to plan a retake without a score report
You have to build your own diagnosis, and the honest way to do it is a timed test rather than a feeling about the day.
Sit the free diagnostic, which runs 24 questions across the main subjects and orders them worst first. Then sit the timed practice test and watch the clock rather than the score, because running out of time and not knowing the material look identical on a result letter that only says fail.
Take the two weakest subjects into the topic sets and work them with a clean 2026 code book beside you.
Ask whether it was the clock
240 minutes for 90 scored items is two minutes forty seconds each. Candidates who fail an open book paper often fail on lookup speed rather than knowledge.
Colorado sharpens that, because you cannot bring a marked book. The copy on the desk is clean and unfamiliar, so every lookup starts from the structure of the code rather than from your own tabs.
The drill is built for exactly that, and which table trains the habit of reading a heading before a row. The book rules page explains why this is the skill that decides Colorado papers.
Or whether it was the edition
If you failed a paper sat after August 1, 2026 having prepared on the 2023 book, the edition is a fair suspect.
Questions have been consistent with the 2026 National Electrical Code since that date, and PSI supplies the 2026 book. The 2023 book can be requested until November 1, 2026, and nothing published says the questions revert for anyone who asks.
Prepare the retake on the 2026 edition either way. The edition page carries the bulletin sentence in full.
If you are sitting under the six year rule
A retake is different for an apprentice caught by C.R.S. 12-115-115(4)(a)(I), because the duty repeats.
That statute requires the journeyman examination at least every three years, in alignment with the license renewal cycle, until a passing score is received. C.R.S. 12-115-115(5) lets the Board suspend the apprentice registration for failing to sit it.
So there is a deadline behind the retake as well as a fee. The six year exam page has the rest.
Questions people ask
How long do I have to wait to retake the Colorado electrician exam?
No waiting period is published. PSI says you cannot make a new appointment on the same day you tested, and gives an example of a candidate failing on Wednesday, calling Thursday and retesting Friday if space allows.
How much is a retake?
$73, against $78 for the first attempt. The fee is not refundable or transferable and is valid for one year from the date of payment.
Will I be told which questions I got wrong?
No. Board rule 3 CCR 710-1.8.C gives results in a pass or fail format and says they will not be given in any other manner. Rule 1.8.D bars candidate review of examinations.
Can I appeal a failed Colorado electrician exam?
No review process is published. The rule says examinations shall not be subject to review by candidates, and the content and answers are treated as proprietary property.
How many times can I retake it?
No limit appears in the bulletin or the rule. What does appear is the one year validity on a paid fee and, for six year apprentices, a statutory duty to keep sitting until they pass.
Should I retake quickly or study first?
That depends on whether you ran out of time or ran out of knowledge, and the result letter will not tell you. Sit a timed practice test and a diagnostic first, then decide.
Thirty free questions, timed, with the working shown
Every miss comes back with the arithmetic worked out and the code section named, so you learn the trap and not just the answer. No account.
All questions here are original. They are not actual exam questions, and no question bank can promise you a pass.
